In fact, Hand guns need a very special license, Ive never even seen a real hand gun, only pictures and whats in movies, also after the massacre at port arthur over here, courtsey of martin bryant, all pump action, and semi automatic rifles are completly illegal, bolt or lever action only. These rules prevent us from protecting ourselfs as we arent allowed to shoot an intruder without being charged as a murderer, but it also prevents the kind of tragic problem like you guys face where teenagers carry guns on a regular basis to schools or on the streets, if you even own a gun here you are thought of as a bad person :P To get a gun license you have to take a massive written and aural test, you also have to have a letter from a land owner giving permission to shoot on their property. Note he said Native Australian, these guys are big problems.
